Since hot melt glue is solid at room temperature and require thorough shearing and kneading of raw materials in a high-viscosity state (ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of mPa·s), the processing equipment must meet extremely high standards regarding heating and temperature control, torque, and vacuum degassing capabilities.

In the production of hot melt glue, sigma mixer is an indispensable core piece of equipment for high-viscosity mixing.

 

Hot Melt Glue Sigma Mixer Working Principle

Hot melt glue sigma blade mixer operate using a pair of non-contacting ∑ (or Z-shaped) mixing blades that rotate at different speeds:

  • High shear force: The two blades rotate towards each other at different speeds (typically with a ratio of approximately 3:2). As the material passes through the point where the blades meet and the narrow gap between the blades and the vessel wall (2-3mm), intense physical tearing, stretching, and squeezing actions are generated.
  • Kneading without dead zones: The blades continuously lift material from the vessel bottom and walls toward the center, facilitating repeated tumbling and convection in three dimensions. This ensures that high-viscosity tackifying resins, EVA granules, and powdered fillers achieve molecular-level uniformity within a short period.

Key Technical Configurations of Sigma Mixer for Hot Melt Glue Processes

1. Precision temperature control and heating system

Hot melt glue typically require temperatures between 150°C and 200°C to melt and flow.

  • Thermal oil circulation heating: High-temperature thermal oil flows through a heating jacket, providing a large heating surface area and highly uniform temperature distribution; this effectively prevents localized overheating, carbonization, and discoloration of heat-sensitive resins.
  • Electric heating: Features a simple structure and low cost, making it suitable for small- to medium-sized production lines.

2. High-vacuum sealing and degassing system

During the kneading stage, air entrapped in the raw materials or volatiles released upon heating can generate bubbles. If these are not removed, the bonding strength and appearance of the final hot melt glue will be directly compromised.

  • The system utilizes a vacuum-rated lid equipped with a high-temperature-resistant silicone or fluororubber seal.
  • A vacuum level of -0.095 MPa to -0.098 MPa is typically required to thoroughly extract microscopic bubbles from within the adhesive mass.

3. Heavy-duty drive system and wear-resistant materials

  • Materials: The inner cylinder liner, mixing paddles, and all parts in contact with the material must be constructed from SS304 or SS316 and undergo high-precision polishing to prevent material adhesion to the walls and ensure product purity.
  • Drive system: A hardened-gear reducer is employed, paired with a variable-frequency drive (VFD) motor, to handle the immense solid-phase resistance and sudden viscosity fluctuations encountered when raw materials are initially charged.

In the actual production of hot melt glue, the shaft seal is a component highly prone to leakage or discoloration (blackening) caused by friction. JCT's hot melt glue sigma mixers utilize a combination of mechanical seals and multiple packing seals, along with a pneumatic pressure-balancing chamber, to completely eliminate issues such as material backflow and product contamination caused by black particles forming at the shaft.
